IMG Workshop 2 - COMSOL by Camilo

Today (4/23) Camilo Velez, a Ph.D. from Dr. Arnold's group and presently a post-doc at CMU is coming back to teach all of us three different COMSOL modules. The modules that will be covered through an example of Joule heating actuator are: ACDC, Heat Transfer and Structural Mechanics.

This is useful for COMSOL beginners and intermediate level people. Be ready with your questions.

IMG Members Will Be Presenting 11 Papers at the 33rd IEEE MEMS 2020 Conference in Vancouver, Canada!

Congratulations to the students and researchers from IMG who were accepted to present at the 33rd IEEE MEMS 2020 Conference in Vancouver, Canada! IEEE MEMS is one of the largest conferences for MEMS experts to converge at. Overall, 11 papers from IMG were accepted out of 800+ abstracts submitted worldwide, as seen below:

IMG Member Keisha Castillo-Torres attended the 2019 Grace Hopper Celebration in Orlando, FL this past week. GHC is the world’s largest gathering of women technologists, and she was nominated to participate through their Community Cohorts pathway program.

Single-Input Control of Large Microrobot Swarms using Serial Addressing for Microassembly and Biomedical Applications

This collaborative research project will create a practical control scheme for large swarms of microrobots. These robots are typically no more than a few millimeters in length, and rely on an external power source and control signal. Currently, it is possible to steer the swarm as a whole to a single destination (or perhaps, to a desired average location). However, realizing the full potential benefits of microrobot swarms will require the ability to simultaneously send independent commands, either to individual robots or to small subgroups.

Dr. Arnold's Group Open House

Dr. Arnold’s group will have an open house on Friday 11/16 at 1:00 PM in the Magnetics lab (Larsen 126). The open house is an invitation to everyone in IMG to learn about the research, the projects, and the equipments of an IMG group. Some demos will be set up in the magnetic lab, and students will discuss about their projects.

  • Nicolas Garraud: Electrodynamic wireless power transfer (EWPT).
  • Keisha Castillo-Torres: Bio-applications of the rotational dynamics setup and magnetic microdiscs.
  • Connor Smith: Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) general overview and demo.
  • Yuzheng Wang: Characterization of electro-permanent magnet (EPM) samples using the VSM.
  • Jacob Ewing: Screen-printed magnetic films for MEMS.

IMG 2018 Kick-Off Meeting

Congratulations to all of this year's IMG Award recipients, and a special thanks to all those who have contributed to our group. This year's kick-off meeting focused on the future of our group, and making it evident that "our most valuable asset is you". Let us continue working as a team and setting a precedent for research groups all around. 

The IMG Awards recognize outstanding achievements and contributions of student members in our organization. The research award honors the exceptional academic impact the students have made in their field, and the service award acknowledges the hard work the students have put into improving and maintaining the quality of IMG.
