Congratulations to Zak Kaufman for being selected as a Goldwater Scholar! The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is awarded to approximately 300 college sophomores and juniors across the nation. Universities are only allowed to nominate four undergraduate students to compete for the final scholarship. This makes it the most prestigious award for undergraduate students in the fields of science and engineering. The scholarship is awarded based on the nominee's field of study, career objectives, and the potential for the student to make a significant contribution to his or her field.
MIT Professor Dr. Jeffrey Lang will review the accomplishments of, and the lessons learned from, twenty five years of research on the development of micro-fabricated motors and generators.
This is an excellent seminar for those who are interested in MEMS. The talk will involve aspects of electromechanics, electrostatics, magnetics, air bearings, microfabrication, and power electronics. A full abstract of the talk and Dr. Lang's biosketch is attached.
Dean Abernathy has appointed Dr. David Arnold as Interim Director of the Nanoscience Institute for Medical and Engineering Technologies (NIMET). The mission of NIMET is to focus and coordinate the research and educational activities at the University of Florida in the fields of nanoscale science and nanotechnology, spanning across disciplines of physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, engineering, and materials science. Dr Arnold will provide technical and intellectual leadership of NIMET and the associated Nanoscale Research Facility (NRF), UF's state-of-the-art cleanroom facility.
