IMG Seminar: Overview of Micropillar Shear Stress Sensors

Event date:
Fri, 08/13/2010 - 3:30pm to 4:00pm

This Friday, Jessica Sockwell will be giving a seminar on micropillar shear stress sensors. Micropillar shear stress sensors have been developed in recent years with the goal of attaining full-field shear stress measurements within turbulent boundary layers. This talk will explain how the sensors work, summarize the design and fabrication of these devices, highlight their strengths and weaknesses, and discuss how these sensors might be further improved for future use.

IMG Picosecond Laser Micromachining Workstation Online

Installation of an Oxford Lasers J-355PS Laser Micromachining Workstation has just been completed and the system is ready for use.  The tool is the first of its kind to be installed in the U.S., and provides a unique capability for IMG by enabling the machining of many different types of materials including sapphire and silicon, as well as other glasses and polymers. Purchase of this system was made possible by collaboration between Professors David Arnold and Mark Sheplak of IMG and Professor Tony Schmitz of UF's Machine Tool Research Center (MTRC).

IMG Seminar: Microvalve on Plastic Microfluidic Device

Event date:
Fri, 06/18/2010 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm

Microfluidics is a rapidly expanding field and microfluidic devices are used in many different areas including biotechnology, chemical analysis and medicine. Microvalves are often one of the building blocks required to complete a successful microfluidic device. They carry out a variety of functions including containing fluids, regulating flows, and isolating one region from another in a microfluidic system.

Dr. Xie's Company, WiOptix, Reaches "Final Four" of Cade Prize Competition

The Cade Prize for Innovation, a new competition designed to recognize Florida inventors, has promoted Dr. Xie's company, WiOptix, to its "Final Four."  The WiOptix entry, "In Vivo Noninvasive Optical Endoscopic Imaging for Early Cancer Diagnosis," will be pitched to a panel of nationally recognized judges on Friday, June 11th.  If selected, WiOptix will receive a $50,000 cash prize and one year of in-kind support. Best of luck to Dr. Xie and the other WiOptix representatives, Martin Wynkoop, Lei Wu, and Shuguang Gu!
