Welcome back from a great summer IMG members!

As the Fall semester moves closer, we will be having our IMG Kickoff Meeting on August 18, 2017 from 11:45AM to 1:30PM. During this meeting, we'll cover all manner of IMG topics and introduce new members to the group. We will also be taking our group photo, so if you have a IMG polo or t-shirt, feel free to wear it.

Please note, all IMG members are expected to attend this meeting! Pizza and drinks will be provided as well!

Dr. Alex Phipps, selected as one of the Top Scientists and Engineers of the Year by the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research Development and Acquisition

Dr. Alex Phipps, 2010 ECE PhD and IMG alumnus was selected as one of the Top Scientists and Engineers of the Year by the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research Development and Acquisition.  Congratulations Alex!

•Dr. Alex Phipps: Selected in the Emergent Engineer Investigator category for his accomplishments in advancing wireless underwater power transfer technologies. “What we’re doing is looking to find a way for unmanned underwater vehicles to persist underwater for much greater periods of time and still be able to perform their mission without having to surface,” Phipps said.

SURF Students in IMG

IMG is pleased to be hosting 3 students in the inaugual Summer Undergraduate Research at Florida (SURF) program, a 10-week immersive research experience for high-performing undergrads.  The SURF cohort consists of 40 students from 23 universities in 16 states, as well as Puerto Rico. Dr. Nishida appointed Interim Associate Dean of Academic Affairs

We congratulate Dr. Toshi Nishida for his new appointment as Interim Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, beginning July 15, 2017. Dr. Nishida is Professor and Associate Chair of Research in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and an Affiliate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at the University of Florida. He received his Ph.D. (1988) and M.S. degrees in Electrical and Computer engineering and B.S. degree in Engineering Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. With colleagues and students, he has published over 150 refereed journal and conference papers and received three best paper awards. He has mentored 23 PhD students. His current research portfolio with graduate students includes high performance multifunctional semiconductor devices and systems, low power memory and device technologies, and novel three-dimensional fabrication. He has 11 issued U.S. patents. Dr. Nishida is the Director of the NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center on Multi-functional Integrated System Technology (MIST) launched in 2014 (www.mist-center.org). The vision of the MIST Center is innovating More than Moore technologies for smart systems in the Internet of Things era. He is a co-founder of the Interdisciplinary Microsystems Group. He received the 2003 College of Engineering Teacher of the Year award, the 2017 University of Florida Term Professorship award, and is an Alan Hastings Faculty Fellow. He is a senior member of the IEEE.

IMG Seminar Series: Origins of Asymmetry in Ferroelectric Si:HfO2 Thin Films with TaN Electrodes

Patrick Lomenzo will present on ferroelectricity in HfO2-based thin films:

Ferroelectricity in HfO2-based thin films offers an intriguing pathway toward the realization of ferroelectric devices for next generation memory technologies. Understanding the reliability characteristics and underlying defects of HfO2 ferroelectrics is of critical importance for its successful adoption in emerging memory devices. The observation of asymmetric ferroelectric properties of HfO2 thin films with TaN electrodes is discussed in the context of charged defects and the chemical properties of the electrode interfaces.

IMG Faculty Help Launch the NSF MIST Center

The NSF Multi-functional Integrated System Technology Center (MIST Center) held it’s Kickoff Meeting on Dec. 11-12, 2014. Led by IMG faculty Dr. Nishida and Dr. Arnold, and in partnership with UCF, the mission of the MIST Center is to facilitate integration of novel materials, processes, devices, and circuits into multi-functional systems through research partnerships between university, industry, and government stakeholders. With inaugural membership from eight organizations, the MIST Center selected 8 projects (6 at UF and 2 at UCF) to be conducted during 2015. The UF projects are:

  • Directed Nanoparticle Assembly by Electrophoretic Deposition (PI: Dr. Arnold)
  • Laser Micromachining of 3-D Miniature Parts in Hard Materials (PI: Dr. Sheplak)
  • Technology Development for Harsh Environment Microsensors (PI: Dr. Sheplak)
  • High-Performance CoPt Micromagnets (PI: Dr. Arnold)
  • Compact Array Antennas with High Gain, Power Efficiency, and EMI Immunity in a System-in-Package Platform (PI: Dr. Yoon)
  • Ferroelectric HfO2 for Energy Storage and Non-volatile Memory Applications (PI: Dr. Nishida)
